Mini From 1 to 10 kgs

The Mini Dog Story:

Mini dogs were originally prized for their hunting skills. Today they are very popular as pets. They take well to a sedentary life, even in towns, on condition they are taken out for regular exercise.
The small size and elegant shapes of miniature dogs make them appear fragile. In fact, Mini dogs are very tough. Their life expectation can exceed 15 years.

Major Characteristics of Mini Dogs:

Mini dogs are quite often subject to sensitive teeth and gums. This sensitivity is linked to the deposits of tartar. A suitable diet contributes to improve oral hygiene.

Small dogs generally have a rather temperamental appetite. A Mini dog's place and presence often leads his owner to encourage bad feeding habits - giving him leftovers from dinner, titbits etc. - which creates fussy eaters.

The Mini dog's daily life is subject to many factors which can cause digestion disturbances: stress, ingesting foreign objects, sedentary urban life etc. This sensitivity can result in faeces that are soft, humid, nauseating and voluminous. On top of these factors, Mini dogs do not generally assimilate proteins properly. A better digestion performance must therefore be assured by highly digestible proteins, the results being seen in consistency and odour of their faeces.

Because of their small size, Mini dogs have greater energy needs than large dogs. An obvious example, they have to make many more steps to cover the same distance.

Some Mini dogs are prone to put on excess weight. The main factor is the reduction of their energy needs, owing to their housebound lifestyle with lack of exercise and their physiological condition when castrated or spaded.

Medium From 11 to 25 kgs

The Medium Dog Story:

Renowned for their bravery, dynamism and physical aptitude for outdoors work, Medium dogs have always been prized for their abilities. With both speed and stamina, they make excellent herding and hunting dogs. Perfectly comfortable with modern lifestyles, they are particularly popular today for their active nature and their intuition, and are often seen in agility and obedience classes.

Major Characteristics of Medium Dogs:

Several factors, such as a sedentary way of life, poor dietary habits, sterilisation, or the genetic predisposition of some breeds, can be the cause of weight gain in medium-sized dogs. This problem cannot be taken lightly, because it can cause health risks and even reduced life expectancy. If a dog is overweight, a reduced fat food must be given and food ration adapted

The Medium dog's immune system and his natural defences need particular attention at every stage of life, from puppies at weaning and during growth, to the great demands of adult dogs and the increased fragility of older dogs. Lively, playful, dynamic and with great endurance qualities, the Medium dog demands a lot of his natural immunity. A specially adapted Health Nutrition food can help reinforce his natural defences and also support his general health.

The skin and coat is the first protective layer in the Medium dog's natural defences. Their role is to protect the body from variations in temperature, shocks, UV rays, and infectious agents so they require a special care.

MAXI - From 26 to 44 kgs

The Maxi Dog Story:

Since olden times, Maxi dogs have been treasured for their incredible working abilities. Even today, they are still superb herding, tracking, rescuing, guarding and assistance dogs. Powerful, devoted, very attractive, strong and vigorous, the Maxi dog is an outdoors type above all, and works alongside his master in a perfect working or sporting partnership.

Major Characteristics of Maxi Dogs:
Maxi dogs are particularly prone to sensitive digestions. This usually shows itself as wet, soft, voluminous and bad-smelling stools, which can be a direct result of the specific anatomical and physiological characteristics of large breed dogs.

Large dogs use a lot of energy. Their very active temperament, combined with a large body mass, puts major stress on their joints, and over time, the cartilages can be damaged and arthritis develop.

The heart rate of the Maxi dogs is lower than small breed dogs. But they develop a stronger power. This explains a higher cardiac sensitivity of large breed dogs, and even more for hyper-active large breed dogs.

There is a common tendency these days for dogs to be prone to weight gain, due to their way of life and their activity levels, with associated risks of damage to long term health and longevity.

The skin and coat reflect the general state of the dog's health. Dry skin, scurf, dry or broken hairs are all signs of a problem. In some Maxi dogs, pollution, poor quality food and using cleaning products too much or in the wrong way can result in skin problems, itching or abnormal hair loss. If this is the case, consult your vet.

Giant – over 45 kgs

The Giant Dog Story:

First found in Ireland between 2500 and 1500 years before Christ, the Irish Wolfhound, also known as the Irish Greyhound, can sometimes reach 1m high at the shoulder, and is thus the world's biggest dog. His courage and extraordinary power has been used in hunting wolves, moose, and even bears. In the image of his glorious ancestors, the Giant dog has a unique stature, power and elegance. He is a quiet, affectionate companion, and totally loyal to his master.

Major Characteristics of Giant Dogs:

A long and intense growth rate, imposing body shape and intense physical activity: the Giant dog puts enormous strain on his joints. During growth and throughout life, it is essential to feed a totally balanced food with no deficiences or excess. For example, calcium, which is necessary for healthy skeletal development, can produce problems if given in excess, such as producing a predisposition to osteochondrosis, which leads to malformation of articular cartilage.

The length of the Giant dog's colon (40 times larger than that of a miniature poodle) is one of explanations for his delicate digestion, because it means that digestive transit takes a long time, thus encouraging fermentation. Also the intestines only account for 2,8% of total body weight, compared to 7% in small-sized dogs. As a result Giant dogs have a lower digestive capacity. They therefore need a food with a very high energy content to minimise the volume of food and avoid digestive overload. Another specific body characteristic, the depth of chest in some Giant breeds, predisposes them to the risk of gastric dilatation-volvulus.

The Giant dog has a life expectancy of between 7 and 9 years, which explains why the effects of early ageing. It is also a recognised fact that large dogs have weaker cardiac systems than other breeds. It is therefore important to give him a specific food which takes account of these 2 paramaters from his arrival at adulthood.
