We asked them a few questions:
Can you introduce Royal Canin in a few words?
Royal Canin is a company which aims at improving the daily life of dogs and cats and ensuring them a better health. Focusing on the animal and acquiring knowledge of the real nutritional requirements of dogs and cats, Royal Canin has been developing its expertise in Health Nutrition for Dogs and Cats.

What do you mean by Health Nutrition?
Dogs and cats, just as human beings, need to eat to stay alive. But once your “survival” is ensured, you look for a balanced diet that will give you enough energy to work throughout the day while maintaining your weight etc. This is the same for Dogs and Cats, except that dogs, cats and human beings are physiologically very different.
Hence cats and dogs call for specific nutritional requirements. Royal Canin’s R&D team constantly acquires more knowledge about dogs and cats and how their bodies function. Once we identify their needs, we develop adapted food products. To put it in a nutshell, Health Nutrition is the way of feeding dogs and cats which takes into account the interest of certain ingredients for health. We believe that by putting some ingredients in the food, you can improve the health of animals.

This sounds very scientific. What are nutrients for example?
Nutrients are simple mineral elements or organic molecules that are the components of food, each one of them being essential to the functioning of the body. Nutrients are divided into families: protides, lipids, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, without forgetting the most important one of all: water. Nutrients are prime elements, just like there are prime numbers, from which all conceptions of a balanced diet must derive.
But home-made food certainly also contains these ingredients so why is processed food better?
A dog or a cat needs around 50 nutrients per meal. The food that you cook at home can technically contain only a few nutrients. Industrial processes are necessary to achieve a diet with enough nutrients for a good health. If you want, making a balanced food is like making a complex jigsaw including about 50 pieces, each piece containing a nutrient indispensable to the animal, all the ingredients being formulated in adequate proportions and complementing one another to contribute to a small or larger piece of the Jigsaw. To give you an idea, an economical food contains 15 nutrients, a standard food 30 nutrients and Royal Canin achieves 50 nutrients.

So which food should I feed my dog?
To find the best food for your dog, you should take into account his breed, his age and his weight. For a 10 month-old Boxer you might consider Boxer product: the kibble has been specially developed for the brachycephalic jaw of the boxer to make it easy for him to prehend; the food contains the proper nutrients that a puppy needs for a good development of his joints and natural defences. Now if you have Rottweiler, which is a Giant dog – meaning he will weigh more than 45 kgs at adult age – we would recommend to buy a product for Giant dogs in our Size Health Nutrition range (divided into Mini / Medium / Maxi / Giant). Kindly consult Royal Canin product selector on www.petclubindia.com for more information on the products.

Last but not least, can you tell me a bit more about Royal Canin?
Royal Canin adventure began in 1968 at Aimargues, a small village in the south of France. Jean Cathary, a veterinarian, got the idea that a better food could help avoiding recurrent eczema in dogs which he believes is caused by a food adverse reaction. Right from the beginning, Royal Canin’s fundamental belief has been “Knowledge and Respect” of dogs and cats and “Animal First” – meaning all our efforts are focused on improving their daily life. Since 1968, Royal Canin has been expanding its presence worldwide – dogs and cats everywhere in the world deserve the best nutrition! Our food today is sold in more than 90 countries! Royal Canin started operations in India in 2000 and has been constantly widening its range. The products are all imported, mainly from France.
