“How to feed a puppy?”
Give several small meals
Depending on their age, your puppy should be given up to three meals a day at scheduled times. Always give the food in the same bowl placed in the same place. This will train your puppy to have good eating habits.

Don’t overfeed
Follow the guidelines recommended on the bag. Avoid giving scraps. They do not meet any of the puppy’s nutritional needs. Excluding scraps will help prevent problems of obesity, which could affect the puppy later in life.

Make sure water is always available
Your puppy must always have access to a bowl of fresh clean water. Change the water regularly, as puppies tend to play with it.

“Obesity, a problem for puppies too.”
While large-breed puppies are predisposed to bone and joint problems, small-breed puppies are at greater risk of obesity. Growth is a period characterised by the multiplications of fat storage cells – adipocytes. Excessive energy intake accelerates this multiplication, leading to juvenile obesity and a predisposition to obesity in the adult dog, because once formed, the cells do not go away. Treats and leftovers are risk factors, as is the size of the dog. A 10g piece of cheese corresponds to 10% of the daily energy requirement of a 3-month old puppy weighing 2kg, but only 1.5 of the daily energy requirement of a Great Dane puppy of the same age.

Another cause of obesity in sometimes very young dogs is the idea that puppies are little darlings that deserve to be indulged. Labradors are especially affected by this.

To conclude, a diet not adapted to the individual dog in terms of quality or quantity is the main cause of specific growth-related diseases. These diseases can be easily prevented: the use of complete prepared foods specially formulated to meet the various requirements of growing puppies and good feeding practices ensure that the puppy grows properly, giving him the best possible start in life.

“How to find if a puppy is overweight?”

There is a simple way of finding out whether the puppy is overweight: place a hand flat on each side of the thorax (around the ribs) and move them towards the back without applying pressure.
All the ribs should be easily felt.
If not, the puppy is overweight and you should consult your veterinarian.

“My puppy continuously asks for food, what should I do?”
One must learn to feed the puppy according to his weight evolution, not each time the pup begs for food.
For optimal digestion, meals are best rationed as follows:
  • 3 meals per day until the age of 6 months
  • 2 meals per day from the age of 6 months

“Free service” is to be avoided since this encourages nibbling and makes the puppy capricious!
Pups that have free access to food at all times, may eventually suffer obesity or experience growth problems…
